A look at the process of individual artists combining efforts to create art with a collective idea or common interest in mind.
November 17 - December 22, 2007
Opening Saturday, November 17th, the Creative Research Laboratory presents Collaboration from Conception. This unique investigation into the process of collaboration features the work of Sodalitas (Shea Little, Joseph Phillips and Jana Swec), Stephanie Bonham and Art Silva, and Katalin Hausel, Leanne Zacharias, and Jaclyn Pryor (all current or recent College of Fine Arts students earning Master or Doctoral degrees in the areas of Studio Art, Theater and Dance, and the School of Music respectively).
Collaboration from Conception is a look at the process of individual artists combining efforts to create art with a collective idea or common interest in mind. Each of the three dynamic artist groups, varying in levels of experience, age, and education, have a unique history and methodology that dictates the way they realize, and then create art. The members of Sodalitas have been working together for over five years as studio artists and on various Austin-based projects including Bolm Studios Complex, E.A.S.T Austin Studio Tour, and co-founding the Texas Biennial. Bonham and Silva have collaborated for one year on limited projects within the context of the Department of Art and Art History. Most recently acquainted are Hausel, Pryor, and Zacharias. They have been hand picked to collaborate for the first time on a project for this exhibition. Their work will be an ongoing project which will continue in Germany at the Akademie Schloss Solitude in the winter of 2008.
This exhibition will focus on new art produced by the collaborative teams. In addition, the viewer will be provided with documentation of the creative act and artist interaction. Downloadable audio documentation, sketchbook samples, photographs, and earlier produced work will help inform the viewer of each group's particular process. In order to generate an open discussion amongst the artist groups and viewers, there will be an artist talk, Discussing Collaboration, to accompany the exhibition on December 4, 2007 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.
In the spirit of collaboration, a catalogue will serve as an additional component to Collaboration from Conception. MA candidate in art history and CRL Intern, Caitlin Topham, will team up with each individual group to relay their work and their process in the form of a written text accompanied by images.
