MAKING IT TOGETHER
AUG. 12 - SEPT. 2, 2006
Opening Saturday, August 12, Creative Research Laboratory presents Making It Together, introducing work by 13 Master of Fine Arts candidates and one alumnus, curated by four Art History graduate students, all from the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Texas at Austin. The opening reception will take place 6 to 9 p.m. at Creative Research Laboratory, located at 2832 East Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard in Austin.
Making It Together is the second of two summer exhibitions organized collaboratively by students in the Department of Art and Art History. The artists featured in Making It Together are Sterling Allen, Jarrod Beck, Roberto Bellini, Erin Cunningham, Erin Curtis, Ali Fitzgerald, Anna Krachey, Christa Mares, Jill Pangallo, Karri Paul, Scot Proctor, Laura Turner, Stephanie Wagner and David Woody. Curators are Andy Campbell, Erika Cole, Rachel Mohl and Ashley Schmiedekamp.
The first show in this collaborative project, Making It Alone, highlighted the work of artists directly engaged in the process of creating work within the studio environment. This current show, Making It Together, features artists working in collaboration. Whether striving to jointly create new works, or situating their work within the context of another artist’s work, these artists meaningfully stretch the boundaries of collaboration. Making It Alone and Making It Together are connected conceptually. Playing on the multiple meanings of “making it” both shows investigate artistic process and success. Together as a whole, both shows present artists whose work is built upon collaboration, risk, play, and artistic evaluation.
The artists in Making It Together work together in a variety of ways. Stephanie Wagner and Erin Curtis team up to present “Vacation Dreams” – a meditation on travel and tourism in two distinct regions. Jarrod Beck and Ali Fitzgerald use the floor and ceiling of CRL to investigate modes of viewing, challenging and changing the viewers’ perception of the gallery space. Artists such as Erin Cunningham and Jill Pangallo collaborate with the audience to create unique artistic experiences.
A catalogue will be published in conjunction with each exhibition. The catalogues represent the true collaborative spirit of both Making It Alone and Making It Together. Each catalogue contains a substantial essay on all the artists appearing in the exhibition. These essays have been penned by Art History graduate students in the Department of Art and Art History. Writers appearing in the Making It Together are Andy Campbell, Erika Cole, Alex Codlin, Amanda Douberley, Tara Kohn, Erica Morawski, Katja Rivera and Melissa Warak.
The first show, Making It Alone, closes Sunday, July 30th.
