Recent Work by MFA Candidates in the Department of Art & Art History at the University of Texas at Austin
July 20 - August 17, 2002 at Creative Research Laboratory
Opening Saturday, July 20, Creative Research Laboratory presents "Jacket," an exhibition of work by seven Master of Fine Arts candidates, curated by three graduate students, all from the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Texas at Austin. The opening reception will take place 6:30 to 8:30 pm at Creative Research Laboratory, located at 2832 East Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard in Austin.
The artists featured in "Jacket" are Brian Bales, Bridget Bird, Jonathan Faber, Holly Fischer, Leona Hons, Margaret McNiel, and Nina Rizzo. The curators are Merchant Adams, Atteqa Ali, and Lynn Boland.
The artists in this exhibition share an interest in craftsmanship. Whether it is the craft of painting or stitching, they pay careful attention to the objects they are making and the materials they are using. The works are seductively beautiful, yet at the same time they are also conceptually meaningful. The artists ask viewers to look beyond the surface to an inner core, calling attention to the relationship between how something appears and what it actually signifies. While they point to serious issues, the artists also add playful elements to their works, making them, on one level, lighthearted. These multiple layers will keep viewers intrigued with the artworks in "Jacket."
Jacket" is the second of two summer exhibitions organized collaboratively by students in the Department of Art and Art History. They are the first of their kind to take place at Creative Research Laboratory, a new exhibition space for the Department of Art and Art History. Creative Research Laboratory presents a year-round schedule of exhibitions of work by students and faculty at the University of Texas at Austin.
Creative Research Laboratory is located in east Austin inside Flatbed World Headquarters. There is ample free parking and bus service available on Capitol Metro's route 18. The activities of the Department of Art and Art History and the Creative Research Laboratory are free and open to the public.
