June 8 - July 13, 2002 at Creative Research Laboratory
Opening Saturday June 8, Creative Research Laboratory presents “Process,” introducing work by seven Master of Fine Arts candidates curated by three graduate students, all from the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Texas at Austin. The opening reception will take place 6:30 to 8:30 pm at Creative Research Laboratory, located at 2832 East Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard in Austin.
Process” is the first of two summer exhibitions organized collaboratively by students in the Department of Art and Art History. The artists featured in “Process” are Aimée Rhodes Cook, Eric Harvey, Hana Hillerova, Young-Min Kang, Suzy Mitchell, Robert Pruitt, and Kate Thomason. The curators are Merchant Adams, Lynn Boland, and Charlotte Cousins.
These artists make visible both the theoretical and the physical practices of art making, providing windows into this process for the spectator. The wide variety of media employed by these artists, from video to assemblage to drawing, emphasizes the act of choosing not only the why, but also the how of creating art. By transforming materials, evidencing mediation (through technologies of digitization and mass media) and combining appropriated elements, the artists draw on different visual strategies that compel the viewer to question their own ways of seeing and constructing meaning.
The 2002 summer student exhibitions are the first of their kind to take place at Creative Research Laboratory, a new exhibition space for the Department of Art and Art History. Creative Research Laboratory presents a year-round schedule of exhibitions of work by students and faculty at the University of Texas at Austin, and also facilitates workshops, performances, demonstrations, seminars and collaborations.
Creative Research Laboratory is located at 2832 East Martin Luther King Boulevard , located in East Austin at 2832 East Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, inside Flatbed World Headquarters.
